The History Behind The Mansion on Main Building
Located in the historic M. Fine and Sons shirt factory, The Mansion on Main received significant time and resources in order to bring this national historic landmark back to life for our residents to enjoy.
The M. Fine and Sons building holds historical significance under National Register Criterion A due to its connection with industrial manufacturing in southern Indiana and the United States from the late nineteenth century through the late twentieth century. It played a pivotal role as a major economic contributor to the City of New Albany and can be linked to the production of the highly regarded work shirt brand, Five Brothers®, which was manufactured on-site. While the original company dissolved in the early twenty-first century, the brand lives on and is now produced by a firm located in Illinois.
Additionally, the building carries historical significance under National Register Criterion C as an exemplary representation of early twentieth-century industrial construction. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Joseph & Joseph of Louisville in 1922 and 1928, it showcases the prevalent eclectic architectural style of the era, featuring intriguing details that served both functional and decorative purposes. Although the architect behind a 1936 addition remains unknown, the structure closely adheres to the original design in many aspects, demonstrating a somewhat sleeker, more modernistic influence.
The Period of Significance for the building, spanning from 1922 to 1950, encompasses the original construction date, subsequent additions, and a period of heightened occupancy and activity during World War II and afterward.
